Welcome to the Barbell Medicine Second Generation Powerbuilding II Program!

We’re thrilled to introduce the new and improved iteration of our popular powerbuilding templates. Powerbuilding II Second Generation replaces both of our original Powerbuilding II and Powerbuilding III programs, giving you a comprehensive, evidence-based system for maximizing gains in both strength and muscle size.

If you love training the Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift—but also want a physique to match your performance—this is the template for you. This program capitalizes on the significant overlap between powerlifting and bodybuilding, offering a hybrid approach that will likely help you progress toward both goals faster than focusing on just one at a time.

What’s Included?

The 2nd Generation Powerbuilding II programs integrate the latest in exercise science with real-world coaching results from 1,000’s of individuals. It has a number of unique features:

  • Three 16-Week templates to suit a wide range of individual’s needs, training resources, and training preferences.
  • Completely customizable exercise selection designed to give the user total control of what lifts they’re doing.
  • The program’s volume and intensity are adaptable to match the user’s current fitness levels.
  • A peaking phase for meet prep and for those wanting to test their 1-Rep Maxes for the comp programs.
  • A 47-page eBook discussing programming theory and design, how-to measure and manage progress, nutrition recommendations, and much, much more.
  • A 32-minute video introduction to the program and a complete walkthrough with detailed explanations!

Who’s it for?

Powerbuilding is the combination of powerlifting and bodybuilding. This program is designed to build maximal strength in the squat, bench press, and deadlift, while also providing enough hypertrophy work to make sure you look the part.

The Second Generation Powerbuilding II programs are aimed at the following individuals who have been training for ~8 months or more and who are looking to prioritize maximal strength and size.

If someone is relatively new to training, we’d recommend completing our Beginner Template or Prescription and then one of our strength-focused templates like Strength I before considering this template.

Finally, the program included in this download can be run in either a calorie surplus (e.g. weight gain), deficit (e.g. weight loss) depending on goals, or at maintenance.

Scheduling

The 2nd Generation Powerbuilding II includes THREE total programs:

  1. 3-Day Powerbuilding (Comp)
  2. 4-Day Powerbuilding (Comp)
  3. 4-Day Powerbuilding (Non-Comp)

The “Comp” programs are structured for those who want to test their 1-Rep Maxes (1RMs) or prepare for a powerlifting meet, featuring a dedicated peaking block.

The “Non-Comp” program is ideal for individuals who enjoy the powerbuilding style—heavy compound lifts combined with hypertrophy work—but do not wish to test their 1RMs or compete, so it replaces the peaking block with a third block of more traditional training.

All programs have 16-weeks of total programming that includes both lifting and cardio recommendations. The programs are broken up into three blocks that are designed to be run consecutively. There are built-in deloads to facilitate this, so no program modification is needed. The training load is very similar between all programs, so choose the one that fits your preferences.

Most lifting sessions will last about an hour, whereas the conditioning sessions range between 30- to 50-minutes. It is 100% okay to mix and match elements of the training week to fit your schedule, even if it means lifting on back-to-back-to-back days.

Equipment Requirements

At a minimum, we recommend users have access to a barbell, rack, plates, and a bench. No specialized equipment is necessary to run this program, but the program does support use of machines, dumbbells, and other equipment like bands, chains, boards, and more if an individual prefers these items.

Lifting shoes, cross-training sneakers, a lifting belt, wrist straps, wraps, etc. can be used as needed per the lifter’s discretion, but they aren’t explicitly needed to run this program.

What’s Next?

After completing any of the programs, you can pick a number of different paths. One option is to run the same exact program again starting from Block I and using the same exercises if you saw good progress the first time. Alternatively, you could repeat the program using different exercises for a slightly different flavor, or use one of the other included programs, e.g. moving to powerlifting to powerbuilding or vice versa, or trying out the general strength and conditioning program.

If your goals have changed and/or you want a different program, we have probably got something to suit you. For guidance, check out our program quiz or ask us directly on our forum.

Finally, 1-on-1 Coaching with the Barbell Medicine staff is also an option. We offer evidence-based programming and nutrition coaching that’s individualized for current fitness level, preferences, and goals. Barbell Medicine coaches are highly trained, with over 50-years of experience between our professionals. If this is something you’re interested in, please email us at support@barbellmedicine.com.

[NOTE: The current batch has become CLUMPY! We are working with our manufacturer on a new batch a few months away. Meanwhile, enjoy a 44% discount since the product is CLUMPY and you’ll need to break it up to use. It does still dissolve just fine in water.]

Peri Rx with Caffeine is a pre-workout supplement designed to improve workout performance and improve your results!

Peri Rx uses only high-quality, evidence-based ingredients at the correct dose to ensure you get the most out of your training. Shouldn’t your pre-workout supplement work as hard as you do?

The Formula

We routinely reformulate Peri Rx based on changing scientific evidence. Here’s what’s in each serving now compared to what was in the OLD formulation (in parentheses):

  • 8 grams of citrulline malate to enhance muscle protein synthesis (4g before)
  • 5 grams of creatine monohydrate to increase energy, cellular hydration, improve performance, and recovery (2.5g before)
  • 6.4 grams of beta alanine for increased work capacity and volume tolerance (3.2g before)
  • Beet root concentrate to yield 500mg nitrates and 12.5mg betalains to complement creatine’s effect on increasing cellular hydration, improve performance, and recovery   (500mg beet root powder before)
  • 300mg caffeine anhydrous (same as before)
  • No essential amino acids (EAAs) (10 grams before)
  • Manufactured in a facility that is compliant with Current Good Manufacturing Processes (CGMP)
  • Every batch of this product is tested for banned substances under the Informed Sport program

Overall, the latest Peri-Rx is a more traditional pre-workout supplement instead of a “pre-” and “post-” workout supplement. To make this change, we’ve doubled the dose of citrulline malate, creatine, and beta alanine because it’s no longer a twice-a-day supplement. This means the supplement will last twice as long compared to before (now 30-days), as it contains 30 servings and is designed to be taken every day.

How Does it Stack Up?

About the Latest Formula

We made the dosing frequency change because the data on essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation continued to show that it wasn’t really doing anything for folks consuming enough protein in their typical diet, e.g. 1.4 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram body weight. In essence, adding more protein on top of this in the form of EAAs was adding Calories, but not gainzZz™.

Additionally, the price of protein has increased substantially. Keeping the EAAs in the supplement would’ve significantly increased the price for no benefit for those already consuming enough protein. The average protein intake in the US is ~ 1.1 to 1.2 grams per kilogram bodyweight per day, so anyone who is even remotely trying to eat a little more protein is unlikely to benefit from a pre workout supplement that includes EAAs or more protein.

We also completely re-tooled the beet root content. In the previous supplement, there was 500mg of beet root, which was supposed to contain ~ 1.25g of betaine (aka TMG) in order to yield 2.5g daily (when taken twice per day). This is the dose used in most studies where exercise performance and exercise-induced adaptations are shown to increase with betaine supplementation compared to placebo.

The problem is run-of-the-mill beet root extract is not as consistent as we’d like for providing this dose of betaine. Additionally, new data has emerged showing another compound within beet root, called betalains, also appears to uniquely improve workout performance and aid in recovery efforts compared to placebo when administered at a dose of 12.5mg per day. Trying to achieve this dose with “off the shelf” beet root is next to impossible, again because the content of beet root is just not standardized.

So, we switched to a new supplier for beet root concentrate, who purifies and tests each batch of beet root extract for the concentration of betaine and betalains to achieve the doses mentioned above. This required a lot of leg work and back-and-forth to finalize a deal, but we did it and there are very few other manufacturers doing this. Plenty will sell you a supplement with beet root extract, but not many can guarantee you the correct dosing you actually want from it.

When do I take it?

  • Take it 20-30 min prior to your workout
  • Ideally, this supplement is taken every day. On days you don’t work out, we would recommend consuming it at a time you would normally have caffeine. Alternatively, someone could take the non-caffeinated version of Peri Rx on off-training days.

Why is there caffeine?

Caffeine can be a big benefit for performance and resistance to fatigue. The optimal dose is different for many based on their weight, caffeine tolerance, and a host of other factors. The beneficial dose can be between 3-9 milligrams per kilogram body weight, or 300-900mg for a 220lb person.

We put 300mg of caffeine in our supplement, which should work reasonably well for those who desire caffeine in their pre workout supplement. However, we would NOT recommend taking this supplement after a workout unless they wanted more caffeine but instead use the non-caffeinated Peri Rx.

The 2nd Generation Low Fatigue programs are primarily aimed at Individuals who have been training for ~12 months or more and who are looking to prioritize maximal strength improvement (powerlifting), strength and size (powerbuilding), and/or overall fitness (general strength and conditioning). The 2nd Generation includes unique programs for all of these goals!

If someone is relatively new to training, we’d recommend completing our Beginner Template or Prescription and then one of our strength-focused templates like Strength I before considering this template.

While strength is also the prioritized goal in our Strength I, II, and III templates, the Low Fatigue Template uses a different approach from a programming standpoint. As the name implies, the programs included in this download generate less fatigue than our other strength templates, which is accomplished primarily by staying further away from failure for the strength-focused work. This approach may work better for some folks and is discussed in greater detail in the accompanying text.

Finally, the program included in this download can be run in either a calorie surplus (e.g. weight gain) or deficit (e.g. weight loss) depending on goals.  See the nutrition section of this document for further discussion here.
